Decorating with Art

Finding your Style

Decorating your home or office should represent your personality and unique style or create your companies atmosphere. An effective way to accomplish this is with art. Paintings accent your home or office, and defines the mood in the space. Art is emotionally gratifying and gives the room a focal point that draws you in. In addition, wall décor will become a conversation piece for family, clients, and guests entering your home or office. An ordinary dull wall can be dressed up by hanging gorgeous oil painting reproductions.

A good way to redesign a space, or decorate a new space, is to start with artwork. Paintings are a great jump off place, as they set the mood and theme and will give you inspiration for the rest of the room. When initiating a home decorating project, a good rule of thumb is to allow 25 to 30% of your decorating budget for artwork. The impact of a few well chosen pieces of wall art can amazingly transform a room with very little work and can be quite inexpensive if you choose reproductions or original paintings from young skilled artist looking to get a start. Here at The Art Oasis we offer affrodable rich textured hand painted oil paintings and reproduction of masters on canvas. All our hand paintings are gallery wrapped and ready for hanging on your wall without framing. We do not sell prints or canvas ransfers.

Choosing the Oil Paintings that Work

There are a few tricks to creating the space you want with art.

  1. To make a room look wider or larger, hang a painting of a distant horizon, such as a landscape painting or beach scene. It will capture your eye, and make you look beyond the walls.
  2. If you have high ceilings and want to balance the room dimensions, hang a painting with horizontal lines such as a roof line or table. Many of our Mediterranean and France paintings have horizontal lines.
  3. If you have low ceilings, balance the space by hanging a painting with strong verticals, eg. paintings of trees, flowers, buildings, or portraits.
  4. Large walls work best with large paintings or a group of smaller paintings.
  5. If you want to lighten a dark room, hang a light coloured painting, or if you want a dramatic look, hang a painting with rich, dark colours. Many of our abstract and designer gold paintings will give your home this feel.

How to Hang Paintings

Here are a few tips for placement of paintings on the wall:

The general guideline for most artwork is to hang it at eye level, which is usually 60” to 65” from the floor to the centre of the artwork.

There are also other elements to consider, depending on the room and your position while viewing the artwork.

  1. If you will be typically standing when viewing the painting (eg. hallway or entrance), you may want to hang the art higher, especially if the ceiling is high.
  2. If you will be sitting while looking at the painting (eg. living room, dining room, or office), you may want to hang the painting lower.
  3. If placement is above furniture, aim for 6-12” above a couch or table.
  4. If placement is up a stairwell, try hanging several paintings in a diagonal line.
  5. If you are working with a grouping of paintings, pretend it is one large picture. Lay out the arrangement on a table or floor first to find the best combination.
  6. If you are really unsure of any placement, and want to save your walls from unnecessary nail holes, cut out a paper template the size of the painting and use painters tape to find the perfect spot on the wall.
  7. Once you consider all the rules, it really comes down to your personal preference and how you will enjoy your artwork the most.
